Climbing Jacob’s Ladder

Climbing Jacob’s Ladder, pieced and appliquéd by Jean Stanclift. Designed by Barbara Brackman and quilted by Lori Kukuk, Lawrence, Kansas. 2005. 47″ × 47″. Jean set five blocks on-point. Over the intersections where the blocks meet, she machine appliquéd a representation of the wild-flower named Jacob’s ladder.

Jacob’s ladder is a member of the phlox family, Polemonium van-bruntiae, a pale purple bloom native to the swamps of the East Coast, from Maryland north to New York. Its leaves grow in matched pairs, a ladderlike image that must have reminded botanists of the biblical story of Jacob’s vision of angels ascending into heaven. The pieced quilt pattern with its triangles, usually called Flying Geese, must have also looked like a celestial ladder to some.

Quilt size: 49½″ × 49½″

Block size: 15″

Border width: 3½″ finished
